Asphalt Pavers

Asphalt Pavers are large pieces of construction equipment used for paving roads and other outdoor surfaces. After new roadways have been graded and a base layer of gravel has been installed, a paver is used to lay the asphalt. The paver distributes this mixture across the roadway and helps to form and shape it. A rolling machine follows the paver to create a smooth and compacted, even surface.

There are two main types of asphalt pavers. The first is a compact unit, used for small paving jobs. These compact units are not self-propelled, and instead must be towed behind a dump truck or tractor. Smaller units work well for narrow spots, but don't usually have the power to pave wide sections of roadway in a single pass.

For larger projects, self-propelled asphalt pavers are used. These units consist of a tractor unit and a screed. The tractor unit is used to steer and propel the paver, and also to distribute the asphalt. Dump trucks are used to fill the paver with asphalt mix before the job begins, and heating and distribution mechanisms within the paver help place the asphalt mix.

The screed on an asphalt paver helps to shape and level the surface in preparation for the rolling machine. It contains vibration units and a number of sensors that allow it to self-adjust, keeping the roadway as smooth and compact as possible. Using controls on the tractor, the operator can automatically widen or narrow the screed as needed for different sections of road. On smaller asphalt pavers, the screed may be placed on the front of the vehicle, which provides better control and handling. When used for larger projects, however, the screed is towed behind the paver as this allows wider areas to be paved more easily.

Asphalt Pavers are available in either wheeled or tracked units. Asphalt pavers with wheels provide excellent speed and mobility, but often don't have the power to pull a wider screed. Machines on conveyor tracks, on the other hand, will not move as quickly or as easily, but offer superior traction, allowing them to make wider pulls.

Concrete Pavers

A Concrete Paver can be used in the above applications but is also for use on airport hard standing, irrigation canals, road barriers, waterways where a level concrete form is required such as retaining walls. This type of paver is also used where the surface needs to be hard wearing due to high temperatures and for areas of high or heavy traffic such as airfields.

A concrete paving machine is horizontally extendable in both length and width, as well as vertically adjustable for screening concrete masses of varying dimensions. The machine is driven on tracks and is further provided with extendable pressure cylinders, which connect a pivotable arm to a fixed support on a side part of the paving machine. This will position the endless track in order to straddle the concrete mass being levelled.

Slipform Paver

A slipform paver is used in place of a concrete paver when it is necessary to create a shaped profile such as a curb, gutter or for barrier construction such as those found on motorways. This differs to a concrete paver as it uses a mould to obtain the desired from which comprises of a hopper, vibration chamber and forming section. Un-compacted concrete is deposited from the feed conveyor into the hopper. From there it travels through a vibration chamber where it is consolidated by a series of individually controlled, variable frequency, vibrating pokers that affect the degree of compaction. In basic terms less vibration is required for more fluid concrete in order to achieve correct compaction. As the slipform paver travels forward the forming section shapes the consolidated concrete into the required profile. The careful balancing of concrete consistence, degree of vibration and travel speed is the key to successful slipform paving.
